- Ladies First -
The series is my take on the way society stereotypical views, has placed and alarmingly continues to place, differing expectations on women and men. None of the views expressed in the work are my own, they have all been identified from areas I have looked at such as advertising, television, radio, literature and magazines etc. The majority of the items advertised on television rely on a shorthand version of gender; easily recognisable stereotypes that we understand immediately, but which at the same time reinforce how women and men should be and behave. Not all of the image pairs are about injustice or even unequal treatment. Some of them are about the simple difference in expectation society has of male and female. Reducing the whole series down to its basic premise is simply to ask what is femininity and what is masculinity.
